Anastasia Klimchynskaya received her doctorate from Penn in 2019, with a dissertation focused on the emergence of science fiction in the nineteenth century. As a postdoctoral researcher at the Stevanovich Institute on the Formation of Knowledge, she explores how literature offers ways to "know" the world, with a particular focus on how science fiction allows us to "know" about those things which are novel, unfamiliar, or potentially non-existent. Her current book project, drawn from her dissertation, argues that the emergence of science fiction in the period following the Industrial Revolution represents the literary incarnation of a new technoscientific paradigm, and that this new form offered frameworks to map, understand, and make coherent this new world order.
