"Archaeology of Sensations: Genealogy of a Queer Modernism as Catastrophe"

Mário Peixoto released his only film, Limite, in 1931. It is hailed as the best Brazilian film of all time. Join Lopes as he pieces together “an archeology of sensations”: fragments of Peixoto’s unpublished journal from a sojourn in England, select photographs, and clips from Limite. Offering a different perspective to Modernism and queer archives, Lopes discusses how Peixoto's practical experience in a foreign country and his journal—indicative of an adolescent queer experience—may translate into a type of sensibility defined by the continuous staging of everyday life, existential melancholy, and a sense of not belonging.
